Situated on the rugged and picturesque west coast of Hokkaido, the Shakotan Peninsula is a convenient 60 kilometres from Niseko and easily accessible by vehicle. Autumn is the best time of year to visit the area and a great time to enjoy some truly amazing trekking courses to the tip of Cape Kamui. The summer season also boasts some of the most renowned uni (sea urchin) in Japan.
Yukinobu Shibata is the former owner of Hotel Snow Universe (which stood before The Vale Niseko). He is one of the pioneer operators in Niseko and owns a popular restaurant specialiasing in local seafood Shinsei (ph 0135-46-5050) on the Shakotan Peninsula. A renowned fisherman travelling internationally to teach his tuna fishing methods, Mr Shibata was also the first man in the world to ski down Mt Kilimanjaro.
