History on the ‘Obon’ holiday:
Obon (お盆) is an annual Japanese Buddhist custom for honouring and commemorating the spirits of one’s ancestors. This 500-year-old tradition believes over the three day Obon period, the ancestor’s spirits return to this world to visit their relatives and household altars. Lanterns hang in front of households to help guide the spirits, the traditional ‘Bon-Odori’ dance is performed and the living also return to ancestral memorial places to maintain grave sites and remember their ancestors.
